Kane took inspiration for this series from the original online myth of The Backrooms, which is an urban legend that originated in a 4chan thread from 2019 about unsettling images. The description of 4chan's Backrooms is as follows:

"If you're not careful and you noclip out of reality in the wrong areas, you'll end up in the Backrooms, where it's nothing but the stink of old moist carpet, the madness of mono-yellow, the endless background noise of fluorescent lights at maxiumum hum-buzz, and approximately six hundred million square miles of randomly segmented empty rooms to be trapped in.

God save you if you hear something wandering around nearby, because it sure as hell has heard you."

The Backrooms Movie[]

At the moment there is a Backrooms horror film based on Kane's videos in the works at A24, Atomic Monster, Chernin, and 21 Laps. Not much is known about the movie, but it's clear that script writing is likely to begin in summer 2023 and that the story is heavily based on Kane's videos, as well as having a lot of input on the script himself. The film will also not be in the "Found Footage style" but in a cinematic style, according to an interview with Parsons.
