Clifton J. Saywell (February 8, 1914 - February 12, 1994) is the main protagonist of the People Still Live Here series. He lived in Bridgewater, Massachusetts for the rest of his life. He loved mathematics and worked as a human computer for local firms and government projects, and then a rate analyst for New England Telephone. He was often seen walking in Hockomock Swamp or sitting on a porch of the Bridgewater Public Library with a notebook in his hand. He rests in the Old Saint Thomas Aquinas Cemetery in Bridgewater, Massachusetts.
