Peter Tench was a former scientist working for the Async Research Institute and the former cameraman for Marvin E. Leigh's exploration team. He is one of the protagonists in Informational Video and the antagonist in Reunion. He was later found dead in the hillside outside the facility after escaping the Backrooms in Damage Control. Tench's cause of death was a blow to the head, having died after tripping down a ditch while frantically running and striking his head on a rock.
Biography[]
Peter was a camera operator for an Async exploration team composed of Marvin E. Leigh, George, Ronald were tasked with exploring the Backrooms. On February 29, 1990, Peter was separated from his team when he investigated the sound of a crowd of people. When he discovered source of the sound came from seemingly nothing, he was transported into the future of May 8, 1990. In a panicked state, he roamed the backrooms in an attempt to return to the Threshold.
While roaming, he encountered two unique areas. The first area was an auditorium-like area with some mysterious black mass in the center of the room. The second area was reached through a shrinking hallway that connected to a dark room composed of a few farming tools, a wooden floor, wallpaper of forests, wallpaper that looks like a stretched texture, and a wall containing a wallpaper with a forced perspective of a barn.
Eventually, Peter reached the Threshold; which is now inside of a newly constructed entry room. When he entered the room, he tripped a motion detection alarm and interrupted an A-sync meeting with the Department of Energy. An Async employee named Clyde attempted to talk to Peter, however Peter didn't recognize Clyde and was in a delirious state.
According to Async, Peter went through a series of tests and determined he was physically healthy. He was informed of the situation regarding his disappearance and how it was covered up through a fake death. At first, he cooperated with Async while they found a way to reverse the fake death so he could be reintegrated back into society without raising too much suspicion.
After 2 weeks of isolation inside the Async facility, presumably only having contact with very few people, Peter's mental health had deteriorated. He had convinced himself that he was inside some illusion created by the Backrooms and the Async employees were going to harm him.
On May 22, 1990, Peter Tench stole credentials and escaped back into the Backrooms before Async could transfer him to a temporary, off-guard residence.
On May 25, 1990, Mark Blume's team is attacked by a now paranoid Peter. Peter stole Mark's shotgun and started demanding information from his former team at gunpoint, asking how many people are in the complex with them, and if a funeral was held for him. During the interaction, Mark attempted to call team A for backup, and Peter commands him to stop. Mark disobeyed, and is shot point-blank by Peter. Peter then tells Marvin to inform his family that he is indeed alive, saying "they need to know."
Afterwards this encounter, Peter found his way back to the Observation Room with Mark's shotgun, and threatened the scientists inside. He eventually escaped via the Threshold and into the real world and ran to a freight elevator, evading two security staff in the process and escaping the facility, entering the hillside that surrounds it. After a long search, Peter was found dead. His head was heavily damaged due to him falling onto a rock in front of him while he was running through some brush. This caused his death.
After Peter's death, Async had no choice but to call a company meeting. During the meeting, the presenter disclosed everything that was kept secret about Peter. This included his faked death, return, shooting of Mark, failed escape, and the time travel footage from Backrooms - Presentation.
